How long does a self-cleaning litter box last?

What the warranties say

Whisker says its free WhiskerCare warranty covers the whole robot, every part of it, for 1 year.¹

The paid WhiskerCare Extended Warranty for the Litter-Robot 4 adds 2 years. On that plan's page Whisker says it covers breakdowns (mechanical and electrical), accidental damage, power surges and software support, and says you can buy it any time in the first year you own the robot.²

PetSafe gives 1 year from the delivery date and covers labor and parts in that year. After the first year, PetSafe says a service or upgrade charge applies.⁴

PETKIT gives a 1-year limited warranty in the US. It names some models, including the PuraMax 2, that get 2 years when bought on or after January 1, 2025. PETKIT does not cover normal wear and tear or the aging of consumable parts.⁵

What wears out first, according to the manuals

The manuals do not rank parts by how often they fail. They do name the parts you are expected to replace during normal use.

• Litter-Robot 4 carbon filter: the manual says one filter should last about 1 month under normal use.¹⁰
• Litter-Robot 4 base seal strips: the manual says to replace them when they are worn flat or peeling up.¹⁰
• Litter-Robot 4 waste drawer liners: you use a new one each time you empty the drawer, and the manual says any 37-49L trash bag also works.¹⁰
• PetSafe ScoopFree litter tray: it is a disposable tray. The manual says using it longer than recommended may cause leaks, and high humidity may shorten tray life.¹¹

Whisker says owners whose robot is still under warranty may qualify for one free replacement of certain parts: the motor, laser board, power supply, bonnet, seal strips and globe liner.⁶

Whisker also sells these Litter-Robot 4 parts on their own: the base, globe, globe liner, motor assembly, laser board, cat presence sensor, power supply, bonnet, bezel and waste drawer with step.⁶

The PetSafe ScoopFree manual lists trays, a privacy cover, mats and a power adaptor as replacement parts. It does not list a motor or rake.¹¹

How to make it last

These steps come straight from the manuals. Each one names its source.

1. Litter-Robot 4: empty the waste drawer when the light bar flashes blue. The manual says twice a week is typical for two average-sized cats.¹²
2. Litter-Robot 4: keep the unit away from walls, and press Reset after you empty the drawer or add litter, so the weight sensors stay zeroed.¹²
3. Litter-Robot 4: check the litter level once a week and fill only to the MAX line inside the globe.¹²
4. Litter-Robot 4: if the unit does not cycle, clear fur and dust from the bezel and the curtain sensor holes with a dry towel.¹³
5. Litter-Robot 4: do not get the seal strips wet, and trim loose edges between replacements.¹⁰
6. Litter-Robot 4: do not soak, spray or put the base or control panel under water, because they hold sensors and electronics. Do not use bleach.¹⁴
7. Litter-Robot 4: if you see a jam error, turn the unit off, remove the bonnet and globe, and check for gear or motor obstruction.¹⁵
8. PetSafe ScoopFree: unplug the unit before cleaning, wipe the frame and rake with mild soap and water, and clean the detection sensors. Do not use bleach.¹⁶
9. PetSafe ScoopFree: lift the waste trap lid straight up. The manual warns that pulling one side first can break off its pegs.¹⁶
10. PetSafe ScoopFree: use only ScoopFree crystal litter trays. The manual says other trays or litter may cause a malfunction and may void the warranty.¹¹

Repair, refurbished units and life after the warranty

Whisker sells reconditioned robots. It says each one is checked to verify it meets original factory specifications.¹⁷

Whisker says reconditioned robots get the same 90-day in-home trial and 1-year WhiskerCare warranty.¹⁸

After the warranty ends, Whisker says parts must be bought. PetSafe says that after year one it may replace the product with new or refurbished items for a service or upgrade charge.⁶⁴
