Are automatic litter boxes safe for cats?
The manuals tie safe use to working sensors, a cat above the minimum weight, and the right settings. Makers also build in protections: Whisker says the Litter-Robot 4 globe halts when a curtain sensor is tripped during a cycle, and it stops and backs up if it senses a pinch.123
We found no CPSC recall of an automatic or self-cleaning litter box as of October 8, 2026.4
By The SmartLitterBox Database desk. Updated October 8, 2026. Based on manuals and the sources listed below; we have not tested these boxes.
What can go wrong
This section lists the risks the manuals themselves warn about.
- A cat is inside when a cycle starts. Whisker's manual says the globe halts if a Curtain Sensor is tripped while a cycle is running. A box without such a sensor has to rely on other checks.1
- Pinch points. Whisker describes sensors that watch for a pinch condition at all times and make the globe stop and retract for 5 seconds.1
- Kittens too light for the scale. Whisker says cats must weigh at least 1.36 kg to use the Litter-Robot 4 in Automatic Mode.1
- Settings that turn a protection off. The PETKIT PURA MAX manual describes a Rotation without interruption option. With it switched on, the box keeps running even when it senses a cat coming near.3
- Dirty or blocked sensors. PetSafe tells owners to clean the detection sensors on the inside of the frame so they are not blocked, and Whisker tells owners to wipe the Curtain Sensor holes.12
A reported cat death and a lawsuit
A June 2025 New York Post article reports a lawsuit over a cat's death. According to the article, the owner found her cat, Sarabi, dead and partly stuck inside an Autoscooper 11 self-cleaning litter box, and she and her partner later filed suit.5
The lawsuit alleges that the box did not stop when the cat was inside and that "a catastrophic failure of the product's safety mechanisms" caused her death. It is a 3-million-dollar lawsuit filed in Bronx Supreme Court, and it names Pet Pivot, which makes the Autoscooper 11, and the retailer that sold it.5
Pet Pivot told the Post it stands by the product's safety and offered the owners 10,000 dollars as a goodwill gesture. The company said this was the only fatal or serious safety incident reported among more than 100,000 units sold.5
These are allegations in a lawsuit and a company statement. The article reports no court ruling on whether the product was defective.5
Has there been a recall?
We searched the CPSC recall database (the public SaferProducts.gov recall service) for the word "litter" on October 8, 2026. Every match was a log splitter, a glitter product or another unrelated item. We found no recall of an automatic or self-cleaning litter box as of October 8, 2026.4
Anyone can file a report of a dangerous product at SaferProducts.gov, which also lets you search reports by brand and model before you buy.6
The six Safety Layers, with examples from manuals
Our model pages count six protections. Each one is counted only when a source says the model has it. Here is what each one does.
- Weight sensor. Whisker says the Litter-Robot 4 has Weight Sensors in its base that detect and weigh the cat inside the globe. PETKIT asks owners to lift and set down the PURA MAX gently because its weight sensor sits underneath.13
- Entry sensor (infrared or radar). The Litter-Robot 4 has Curtain Sensors looking down across the opening. PetSafe says detection sensors recognize when the cat is inside the ScoopFree, and the rake will not clean while a cat blocks them.12
- Anti-pinch. Whisker says the globe stops and retracts for 5 seconds if a potential pinch condition is detected while cycling.1
- Open entry. This means no door or shutter moves over the opening during a cycle.
- Cycle delay of at least 3 minutes. Whisker's delay can be set to 3, 7, 15, 25 or 30 minutes, with 7 as the default. Neakasa says the M1 cleans 5 minutes after the cat leaves. PetSafe says the ScoopFree rakes 20 minutes after the cat leaves, and the timer stops if the cat comes back.172
- Physical stop button. Whisker says pressing a button during a Clean cycle pauses it. PetSafe says pushing the manual rake button again stops the rake.12
What to look for in a manual before buying
Most makers post the manual online. Before you buy, open it and check these points.
- Find the minimum cat weight or age. Whisker gives 1.36 kg. PETKIT says kittens under six months and cats under 1.5 kg are not recommended. PetSafe gives an age of 6 months.123
- Look for a sensor at the opening, not only a scale. Whisker describes both a curtain sensor and a weight scale on the Litter-Robot 4.1
- Look for the words pinch, stop or retract in the description of a cycle.1
- Check whether any setting lets the box keep running when a cat approaches, like PETKIT's Rotation without interruption, and leave it off.3
- Check the cycle delay and whether a button on the unit can pause a cycle without the app.12
- Read the cleaning section to see how the sensors must be kept clean.12
Kittens and small cats
Whisker does not recommend that kittens or cats under 1.36 kg use the Litter-Robot 4 in unattended Automatic Mode. It suggests leaving the unit off and starting a Clean cycle by hand after the kitten has used it.1
PetSafe tells owners of kittens under 6 months to leave the ScoopFree unplugged and scoop by hand until the kitten is 6 months old. PETKIT says owners with kittens or pregnant cats should switch on Kitten mode. Neakasa's manual points owners of cats under 1 kg to its Kitten Mode.723
The table below shows each model's minimum cat weight as stated by its maker, with sources.

| Neakasa M1 Open-Top Self-Cleaning Litter Box (PS0120) | 2.2 lb (1 kg) claimed9 |

When to talk to a vet
Many cats take to a self-cleaning box without trouble, but some avoid it.1112
If a cat starts going outside its box, the type of box is one of the things to change.1112
The first step when a cat goes outside the box is a vet check for medical problems.1113
A cat that has had a bad or frightening experience in its box may start to avoid it.1114
Cats prefer a quiet spot for the litter box and may avoid one in a noisy or busy place.1312
Straining, frequent tries to urinate, and blood in the urine are signs of a urinary problem.1115
A cat that tries but cannot pass urine is an emergency and needs a vet right away.1516
